Breaking Up Is Hard To Do
They say that breaking up is hard to do
Now I know, I know that it's true
Neil Sedaka (1968)
The problem with breaking up or moving on is this: even if wherever you are or whoever you are with hadn't been good to or good for you, you'll rather stay with them, remain where you are, than say goodbye and move on.
Because even if wherever you are, or whoever you are with, is shit, there's no guarantee that things will get better if and when you move on; and, being human, you're worried you might be leaving the frying pan for the fire.
So here we are. It doesn't matter whether you are leaving me, or I am leaving you: this is it - the end - we're finally going our separate ways.
Give me a final kiss and say goodbye. You haven't been good to me, but we've had our share of good times.
I know I've spent a lot of time earlier this year thinking and complaining about you, about how you were and were going to be so completely awful, and I didn't like you much, but now that we're leaving each other, I ... I feel a little anxious about moving on. (I do wish I had given you a chance, though.)
I can only hope for things to get better, but that's also up to me, I suppose.
With a brave smile, I bid you farewell forever. I don't cry because I can't cry. You have wept for a bit, but now I see your fragile blue smile.
Keep smiling until we are both out of each other's sight.
Goodbye, 2005.
