I've Got You Under My Skin (And In My Bookmarks)
There is a tiltilating veil of mystery that enshrouds (certain) blog writers. For me, they are the blog writers who are intimidatingly intelligent, charmingly witty, and attractively funny. And they hardly - if ever - post any pictures of themselves on their blogs.
It seems like a blog is almost the perfect setting for an infatuation to germinate, you know?
As these writers post their musings and reflections, and anecdotes from their daily lives, you get an idea of what they're like ... or, at least, of their online personas (but I believe there will always be a little part of the real person showing through the mask).
Sometimes, you read about experiences that completely mirror your own (making you wonder - if you're the fanciful sort - if that writer continents away from you could be your red-thread mate); sometimes, you live vicariously through their experiences.
Some other times, you learn from what they've gleamed; some other times, you wish you could relate to them.
And gradually - inevitably - you start wondering what this warm, courageous, humorous, philosophical, poetic (the adjectives just run on and on ...) online persona is like offline, and how they look.
I think this is prolly the best bit of having an 'online crush': the fantasizing. With only a little knowledge, you've got plenty of room for imagination!
I've always wondered what 'forksplit', 'Francesca' and 'vaya' are like in real life, and how they look. I am very drawn to their writings, and have bookmarked their blogs for posterity. They seem like really delightful company - smart, sharp, and sassy women. I'd love to meet women like them, and hang around for a drink and a chat.
And then I read my own blog(s) and wonder how my online persona (have I one?) would come across to them: would they like what they read? Would they find me hopelessly inarticulate and mind-numbingly dull?
I think I'm seriously outclassed.
Argh ... Best not to think so much about this. I'll just continue to silently stalk their blogs, nursing my infatuations.
... and uh, have I just outed myself as one of the (I'd think) handful of blog readers around who stalk blog(s) and develop crushes on the writer(s) of the blog(s) they read?
(Oh gawd, can I sink any lower?)
